Good morning!

It’s no secret by now that plastic in the oceans is a real problem; some estimate that it may now outnumber fish by sheer volume. And while plastics of all sorts pose a problem to marine wildlife—we’re now unfortunately familiar with the image of a fish trapped in six-pack rings—straws have recently inspired a particular outrage, both for how often unnecessary they are, and for how easily they slip through cracks in recycling systems.

But they’ve also inspired designers to come up with a more sustainable alternative: an edible version called Lolistraw. Instead of plastic, the straws are made with a durable, seaweed-based material that’s naturally neutral-tasting but can be flavored—imagine, for instance, drinking coffee through a caramel-flavored straw that you then snack on after you finish your drink. Loliware, the company behind the straws, plans to target venues where plastic straws are used in abundance, like sports stadiums and fast-casual restaurants. It’s currently raising funds to do so on Kickstarter, and we can probably all agree that especially compared to the current sustainable alternative—paper straws—this edible variety is a step in the right direction.
